How Much Sleep Do We Need?

Most adults need 7-8 hours of good quality sleep a night.  This may vary depending on how much exercise you have done throughout the day, how physical your job is and how many times you have been up in the night.  How much sleep do children need?

Babies 4 to 12 months

12-16 hours a day including naps

Toddlers 1 to 2 years

11-14 hours a day including naps

Children 3 to 5 years

10-13 hours a day

Children 13-18

8-10 hours a day

If children do not get enough sleep, it can lead to behavioural problems, learning difficulties, depression in older children/teens and obesity.  It’s important to make sleep for children as important as eating, homework and brushing their teeth.  Make sure that you start their bedtime routine early enough so they have time to relax and unwind, encourage teenagers to do the same.  Switch off electrical devices at least two hours before bedtime and encourage children to leave them downstairs to avoid any temptations.  Just as with adults, try to stick to the same times for bed during the week and at weekends.
